What to do: First time helmet buyers

Getting a properly fitted helmet is the difference between adequate protection, and basically no protection at all. Shopping online for your helmet is a challenge because without someone fitting you into your helmet, you'll have to advice on whether or not the helmet you chose is going to be safe for you. 

If you are a first time buyer, it is important that you go to your local Powersport dealer first, prior to making your purchase, so that you know how your helmet is supposed to fit you. Certain things that you will learn about will be: 

• The shape of the helmet, eg. Oval or Round, and how this helmet will feel for you. 
• The tightness - generally speaking you'll want your helmet to fit quite tight in the beginning because the padding in most helmets will pack down after some time of wear. You'll want to try on a few different sizes from a few different brands to see how tightness affects your comfort level. 
  • The tightness of the helmet will also depend on whether it is a full, half, or open face helmet. Different tightness will feel different for each style type, and you will definitely like each helmet fitting a different way. 
• Pressure points - if you have the improper shape helmet for your head, or improper tightness, this will result in pressure points causing you pain. You'll want to have a lengthy discussion with the powersport representative on how the fitment will optimize the safety effectiveness. 

The best/ most optimal way to purchase your helmet is through your local dealer, but if there is not a purchase option for you at that dealer, then the alternative is to shop what the online world has to offer. But definitely make sure you have a good understanding of how your helmet is supposed to fit, to avoid any unsafe circumstances. Safety of your head is no joke! Get informed before you ride.
